Taylor Suspects Almost Aborted Burglary

The burglary that led to the shooting death of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor almost didn't happen when one suspect heard a noise and wanted to flee, an attorney close to the case said Friday.

But the lawyer, Richard Sharpstein, said the alleged triggerman told police he was the cause of the noise and talked the others into continuing, leading to a confrontation early Nov. 26 that ended with a machete-wielding Taylor fatally shot.

"It was a botched burglary all along. It's senseless, mindless and tragic," said Sharpstein, who has acted as a Taylor family spokesman and once represented Taylor in an unrelated case.

Sharpstein, a veteran Miami defense attorney, said his information came from unreleased statements to police given by the four suspects in the case.

Press anger

We are shocked, like everybody else, at the inertia and ineptitude... Most surprising, President Kibaki, at whom the buck stops, and his rival Raila Odinga, other than that photo-ops session last week, have not taken the message of peace to the doorstep of their followers. We want to exhort President Kibaki to come out of State House and tackle the unfolding crisis. He cannot keep quiet when the country is burning. We also demand the same of Mr Odinga.

Bédard still waiting on the call

The Seattle Mariners may still become Les Mariniers, at least in Navan and Gatineau, with the chance that the team will some day boast an all-national capital one-two punch at the top of the rotation.

The pieces appear to be in place for a blockbuster five-for-one deal with the Baltimore Orioles to bring Navan's Erik Bédard to the Northwest to head up the Mariners' rotation.

With the Mariners already having chosen Phillippe Aumont, Gatineau's 6-7, 96-m.p.h.-throwing right-hander with their No. 1 pick in last June's draft, a Bédard-Aumont combo might be a strong possibility before Bédard's next contract runs out.

Obama Beats ... Jesse Jackson

The assumption that the wealthy care nothing for the poor, and that the poor don't vote. The assumption that African-Americans can't support the white candidate; whites can't support the African-American candidate ....

Works for me. ... [The passage works for you or the "assumption" works for you?--reader M. The passage. I'm being non-snarky. Perilously close to swooning!] ... 6:38 P.M.

Why does the crowd at Obama's victory rally just happen to look like a perfect, multiracial group of pleasant, idealistic, attractive Americans? I suspect it's because the crowd at Obama rallies typically is a perfect multiracial group of pleasant idealistic, attractive Americans. I've never been in a more benign-seeming group. They're clean! (And articulate!) Maybe a little edgeless.

New Louisiana Tech blog: Rare WAC road win big for progressing ...

Moving into the final recruiting period before national signing day, one target Louisiana Tech football coach Derek Dooley is likely to take full aim at is St. James running back/athlete Luther Ambrose, ranked No. 37 among all-purpose backs by Rivals.com.The 5-9, 160-pounder is a blazer, running a 4.29 40-yard dash, could help provide a little more of the big-play potential the Bulldogs sorely lacked in Dooley's first season at the helm.Ambrose has already received scholarship offers from Tech and Ole Miss according to Rivals.com.The speedster also runs track for St. James as was NOLA.com's 2007 Track Athlete of the season.Working out of the Wing-T formation, Ambrose totaled 1,138 rushing yards -- 9.8 yards per carry -- and scored a 11 touchdowns despite battle ankle injuries throughout the season. As a junior Ambrose rushed for 1,200 yards with 12 scores.Ambrose is a big talent who already has an offer from Ole Miss and has other SEC schools on the watch.

Republican rivals open final assault in Florida

She just missed a wonderful opportunity to show America that she can be such a candidate. I firmly think that her defeat in South Carolina is a direct backlash against Bill Clinton's dirty politics against Barak's candidacy. Shame on you, Bill. For a liked and respected President to engage in below the belt tactics for political gain, that demonstrates that the Clintons will stop at nothing to WIN.

I don't think the Obama campaign team has been preaching Hillary's gender as much as the Clinton campaign operatives have touted Obama's race. Who cares? What if there is a green or purple looking President in Office if they are smart and are able to deliver the goods to the American people? After all, intelligence is sometimes not even necessary to run this high office, as long as they surround themselves with a strong team of governance … well, Ronald Reagan prospered for eight years; unfortunately, Bush No.2 cannot even measure to Reagan's superb acting qualities.
