| English-Canadian cinema leads Genie Awards
It doesn't look like there are going to be too many French speeches at this year's Genie Awards. For the past few years, Quebecois films have handily dominated the Genies, the Canadian films awards, to the delight of the local film community here and to the consternation of frustrated English-Canadian filmmakers. But English-Canadian cinema is back in a big way at the Genies, with the top four contenders all from the rest of Canada. Toronto filmmaker David Cronenberg's gritty London-set mob drama Eastern Promises and Hollywood veteran Roger Spottiswoode's Shake Hands with the Devil, based on the experiences of General Romeo Dallaire during the Rwandan genocide, have the most Genie nominations. Each have 12 nominations. Toronto actress-turned-director Sarah Polley's Alzheimer's drama Away From Her, which just landed two Oscar nods, is up for seven Genies, and Toronto filmmaker Bruce McDonald's visually innovative troubled-teen drama The Tracey Fragments nabbed six Genie nods.
Griffin's quick return, UConn's shorthanded effort highlight week
He is not only having a great season on the court, but the senior captain sets the tone for Mike Krzyzewski off the court, as well. Last season, in naming three tri-captains, Nelson, Greg Paulus and the now departed Josh McRoberts, Coach K told me last week that he felt the leadership of the team may have gotten diluted. This year, there is one dominant voice in the Duke locker room and it is Nelson's. One thing that can drain a coach over the course of a long season is when he has to be both the coach and the captain of the team. In other words, he has be the constant voice that the players hear. It gets old and the voice gets stale, even if it's a Hall of Fame coach. It's a lot easier when there is a veteran player in the locker room parroting what the coach wants accomplished.
Dan Shanoff's Wake-Up Call: Welcome!
Opening Pitch: Welcome to the first-ever edition of Dan Shanoff's Wake-Up Call on SportingNews.com and The Sporting Blog. This is the last time I refer to myself, Jimmy-style, in third person. I'll make this quick: If you have ever read The Daily Quickie or the "A.M. Quickie" post at DanShanoff.com, you know what I'm doing here: Quick-hit takes on everything that matters, every weekday morning. It's fast. It's shallow. It's hysterical, but not in the funny way. There are other things you'll regularly see -- an addiction to "Best. Blank. Ever." superlatives, a healthy disregard for historical context, biased obsessions and bandwagon crusades -- but we'll get to those. Glad you're here. Glad I'm here. Let's move past this awkward introduction phase and just get right into things ... Peyton Manning re-assumes his rightful place as King of the Chokers: He'll always have that Super Bowl ring, but let's all at least acknowledge that, as of today, it was a one-year blip in a career that has been otherwise marked by postseason disappointment.
doesn't stand up to scrutiny
About the Florida and Michigan delegations: On TV theyv'e been confidently talking about Hillary's call for seating the Michigan and Florida delegations as if that will be her trump card at a contested convention. She'll almost certainly win the Florida vote next week, and she's already won in Michigan. But I don't see how the convention can fairly award Hillary the delegates from those states after the DNC got her competitors to pledge not to campaign in those states' primaries. Doesn't that discredit those primaries? Or should Obama and Edwards be punished because they obeyed their party? ... Maybe the convention should seat some Florida and Michigan delegates, but if so you'd think the party would make those states choose them anew through an actual contested election, caucus, or convention.
Married to the sport: The Kristin Danielson diary 2006
Here, there, everywhere is the story of my summertime life. No wonder my parents always say ‘we can’t keep up with you’, I can barely keep up with myself! My latest traveling saga started in Crested Butte, Colorado. I have always had a fascination with this appealing mountain town and it was hosting the 6th annual Wildflower Rush mountain bike race which is a part of the Mountain States Cup series. I hadn’t planned on competing due to the fact that Tom and I had limited time to spend together. Thursday before the race, which was on Saturday, Tom mentioned maybe I should race. Since I often get my training advice from Tom, I couldn’t object. I pleaded with Tom to join me on the short outing but since there are really only two roads surrounding Crested Butte he had to turn me down.
Man Convicted in Death of Aunt of Former NBC Anchor Stone Phillips
Doris Phillips turned up missing from her home in Reagor Springs, 32 miles south of Dallas, in July 2006. Investigators say Arciba two months later led them to the woman's body in an abandoned farmhouse near Bardwell, about 11 miles southeast of her home. Arciba initially was arrested on a burglary charge related to the disappearance. Autopsy results indicated Doris Phillips suffered a fractured pelvis and skull. Stone Phillips left "Dateline NBC" in June 2007. --- Information from Waxahachie Daily Light & KXAS-TV: www.thedailylight.com & www.nbc5i.com ©2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Bush Hears Basics on Iraq Reconstruction
The hourlong session involved three PRT leaders talking via secure videoconference from Iraq and three others ("on vacation" back in the States) in the Roosevelt Room. Those watching the giant screen with them and Bush included Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Bush talked little, asking a few questions, making a couple of jokes and giving a brief pep talk. Bush said in the Rose Garden afterward that the meeting, along with separate teleconferences Tuesday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador, gave him confidence that recent security gains are producing political successes, and will do so even more.
